Harry Kewell is still a chance to recover from injury to face Japan in a World Cup qualifier next week. The Galatasaray star was left out of Pim Verbeek's initial 22-man squad which was announced today but if he can prove his fitness will be considered.

Kewell had to undergo a hernia operation during the Christmas break and is regaining full fitness but would have to play enough minutes against Kayserispor at home on Saturday to be a realistic chance.

Verbeek said the former Leeds and Liverpool star is definitely on stand-by.

"What Harry's dad told me is that if there's any chance, and there is a chance he could play the weekend, I can always call on him," Verbeek said.

"But then he has to play on the weekend and then I can make up my mind."
