Kewell’s fitness again a concern as Australia squad named for World Cup qualifiers
Harry Kewell has again been named in the most recent Australia squad but is a doubt because of ongoing fitness concerns.
The former Leeds United and Liverpool winger is currently out of contract after his deal with Turkish club Galatasaray expired at the end of last season and but has been included in the 32-man provisional squad for the first two Asian World Cup qualifiers next month.
The Socceroos take on Thailand in Brisbane on September 2 before meeting Saudi Arabia in Riyadh four days later and Holger Osieck has thrown in Kewell, along with Vince Grella and Mark Bresciano, who have not featured for the national team for some time.
Osieck’s initial list will be cut down to 23 next week so it will be interesting to see if the 32-year old can force himself to a state of fitness that would see the German pick him for the beginning of the 2014 Brazil qualifying campaign.
