Kewell faces race against time to be fit for qualifier

Harry Kewell will need to prove his fitness to his club first before he is a realistic chance of taking part in the Socceroos World Cup qualifier next week.

The 30-year old was named in Pim Verbeek’s 35-man squad, which will need to be trimmed before the October 15 match in Brisbane against Qatar, but if Kewell cannot get up to make an appearance for Galatasaray on the weekend he is almost certain to miss the international.

The form of Kewell has been outstanding in Turkey as he relishes a fresh start but it seems to be the same old story as injury again interrupts his progress.

He has been able to string together more games recently than in previous years but the fact he will be underdone and in danger of further damage to his ever-troubling groin will reduce the probability of playing.
