Kewell admits: ‘Liverpool was a nightmare’

Harry Kewell has opened up about his time at Liverpool.

The Australian great endured an injury-prone five-year spell at Anfield for which he is most famously known for coming off injured in the first half of the Champions League final in 2005 and early in the second half of the FA Cup final the following year.

Kewell was an undoubted talent during his stint with Liverpool but admits it was not the most memorable stage of his glittering career as he simply couldn't get on the pitch regularly.

In an interview with the Herald Sun, Kewell said: "Liverpool. It was a nightmare, absolute nightmare.

"I've had 14 operations and the majority were at Liverpool.

"When you have an operation and think that's it, I'm finished now and I'll be brand new again. It doesn't happen, that's just a piece of a puzzle that's got fixed but another piece falls apart.

"You've got to get to the core root of the problem. Eventually we did, but it was just that three years.

"You work your whole life. You talk about 2005 and I put it into an event, you put your life to be at the highest level possible, which for an Australian is European Cup final.

"I got to achieve that, only to come crashing down. I'm only talking on a personal note, it was a nightmare for me.

"To be able to walk out with my team, you want to be there. Then my groin snapped.

"But witnessing my team being able to win that was special. Individual stuff is great, but you don't win anything without the team."
