Keown slams Koeman for Everton squad blunder

Former Everton defender Martin Keown has slammed sacked manager Ronald Koeman for leaving the club short in Europe.

Everton are out of the Europa League after defeat at Lyon, with their hopes hindered by a lack of striker options.

“(Oumar) Niasse is not available for this competition, obviously Ronald Koeman never named him, which was another disaster," Keown said on BT Sport.

“Niasse is probably the answer to play up front. They need a recognised player up front, they're not even looking at Sigurdsson at times.

“Put the ball in there. I don't want to mention (Romelu) Lukaku every time Everton play, but you would have put the ball into the box instinctively.

“They look up, they see Sigurdsson, and they don't deliver.

“He had Giroud in the building and he never made that. He put all his eggs into one basket and Giroud didn't come.

“There should have been (a plan B), that's what top management is.

“There almost should be another player waiting in another room ready to make the switch if he doesn't come to the club."
