Kennedy will not splurge on players if he takes over at Rangers

Prospective Rangers buyer Brian Kennedy will not stick loads of money into the club if he is successful in his takeover.

The Sale Sharks owner and Edinburgh-born businessman is one of three bidders acknowledged by the Glasgow club and it has been revealed that he is not going to spend fortunes on the squad.

A source close to Kennedy told Record Sport that the 51-year old feels that club was in financial trouble before Craig Whyte took over and is of the belief that a more prudent approach should be taken if he is the man to step into the hotseat.

"Brian has looked at the numbers in great detail and the reason Rangers went bust is not because of Craig Whyte. It went bust because it was spending £10million more than it was generating," the source said.

"Ultimately, if the sugar daddy who owns this club suddenly decides he is not going to put that money in, eventually the thing falls over.

"It's just that Whyte took it on and then went about things in all sorts of devious ways.

"The reality is, he took over a basket case. If this club is to be preserved and is to be taken forward over the next 140 years, the worst thing that can be done is someone sticking another big load of cash in to go out and buy players.

"Brian is doing this because he wants to preserve a critical part of Scotland and of Glasgow.

"He does not see it as an investment opportunity. Any financial institution won't be buying it for the love of Rangers - they'll be looking for a return on their money.

"He wants it to survive for another 140 years, so you put it in a state where it washes its face and it doesn't lose money. You certainly don't take money out of it."
