Keane sent off but LA Galaxy score big win in CCL

LA Galaxy kicked off their 2012/13 CONCACAF Champions League campaign with a 5-2 home win over Salvadoran club Isidro Metapan.

Despite Robbie Keane being sent off in the 70th minute, the Galaxy had already done the damage after going a goal behind inside 20 minutes.

Nicolas Munoz kicked off proceedings for the visitors in the 17th minute before Ricardo Alvarado's own-goal levelled it up for the Galaxy.

But from then on it was all the home side as Robbie Keane and David Beckham made it 3-1 by half-time before Keane, who was yellow-carded for diving outside the box, dragged himself off with the referee then brandishing a red card.

Juninho added a fourth with eight minutes remaining before Munoz's 87th-minute penalty gave Metapan a slight chance but Juninho snuffed that out with a second, and the Galaxy's fifth, to wrap things up.

Despite the win, LA boss Bruce Arena was disgusted with the performance of head match official Alfredo Penazola who missed a lot of calls throughout the Group 5 clash.

"I sometimes wonder why we spend all the resources and time we do in this competition when sometimes it looks really bizarre," he said.

"The referee missed the call. And, typical, we've seen in these competitions, the referees think they're bigger than the game itself and they've got to put themselves ahead of everything.

"I don't know, Robbie spoke, said something, whatever. But when a referee misses a call like that, he's got to be big enough to kind of ignore it and let the game go on. So the player gets a yellow card for diving when he's fouled and then, obviously, a red card for ... I don't even know. They didn't explain anything to us."
