Keane, Donovan revel in LA Galaxy’s SuperClasico victory

Both Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan felt the LA Galaxy made the first step to getting back to their best on the weekend.

Both Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan felt the LA Galaxy made the first step to getting back to their best on the weekend.

The 2011 and 2012 MLS Cup winners had kicked off the 2014 season with a loss and a draw before producing a 3-0 victory over Chivas USA in the SuperClasico at the Stubhub Center on Sunday.

Keane, who scored the opening goal in the 37th minute, suggested that the Galaxy were on the road back to producing the kind of top-quality soccer they are capable of.

“I thought it was a great performance from start to finish,” said Keane.

“Certain the way we played, the manner that we played – keeping possession, keeping the ball – sometimes an extra pass can open up the defense, and that was certainly the case today.

“I was fairly confident in the way that we were playing, and certainly the way we were training, that it was going to come.

“It's only been three games, so don't get too carried away, but it was a performance that I think has been coming for us for a couple games.”

In agreement was Donovan, who had a hand in two of the Galaxy’s goals: “Today was very enjoyable. I think we had a lot of fun playing today.

“As we get more comfortable with each other, that's going to get even better.”

Keane was well-placed to give LA the lead in the 37th minute when he slotted home Dan Gargan’s header from close range before Stefan Ishizaki grabbed his first MLS goal five minutes later with a deft chipped finish from a tight angle.

The season-first league victory for the Galaxy was then rounded out when Baggio Husidic opened his club account in the 56th minute when firing home from the edge of the area.
