Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo was full of pride over Italy's 2-1 win over England.

Italy kicked off the World Cup in winning style.

"I was the captain of a courageous Italy that wanted to play good football and impose its style on England," Pirlo told media.

"I think that we did that for the first half and a large portion of the second half too. It was a great game, despite suffering in the heat.

"We are a good team and we can go forward."
