Juventus icon Del Piero favoured to take on Man Utd

Sydney FC striker Alessandro Del Piero has received the highest number of votes in the forwards position for the inaugural A-League All-Stars match.

The Juventus idol was the most voted for player in the strikers spot as 30,000 votes were cast by fans for the clash with English champions Manchester United in Sydney on July 20.

Fans were able to choose from all 10 A-League clubs in picking a squad of 15 players and were also able to select their preferred formation with the most favoured being the traditional 4-4-2.

Of the four standard football positions, Central Coast Mariners young gun Mat Ryan gained the most selections as goalkeeper, Western Sydney Wanderers centre-half Nikolai Topor-Stanley was voted in for defence and Wanderers Japanese ace Shinji Ono got the nod in midfield along with Del Piero.

The fans vote accounts for 50% of the final 18-man squad selected which will then be taken out by the Foxtel A-League All Stars Expert Panel who will reason for 20% of the overall vote, head coach Ange Postecoglou taking 10% and the 20% Player vote via the PFA Team of the Year also taken into account.
