Junior mentor backing Joe Gomez for big Liverpool season

Joe Gomez's junior mentor is eager to see him back in action for Liverpool.

The 19-year-old joined the Reds last summer from Charlton in a £3.5m deal and made an impressive start to the season producing some composed displays.

But just days after Jurgen Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers as Liverpool manager last October, Gomez suffered a cruciate ligament injury playing for England Under-21s.

His former football coach at Forest Hill School, Gary Taylor, is looking forward to seeing him back in action.

“Klopp seems the perfect coach for him," he told the Daily Star.

“He's a former defender himself and appears willing to give youth a chance which should benefit Joe.

“It's been a fairly meteoric rise but we're all very optimistic at Forest Hill.

“I think he can go all the way to being a regular England international. He has progressed through the age groups and has met every challenge head on. I see no reason why he shouldn't continue developing and progressing.

“His mindset, his determination, his commitment will help him no ends along the way. We have every desire and optimism that he will become a star at the top."
