Manchester United U21 coach Warren Joyce praised Josh Harrop after his two goals in their friendly win over Barnsley.
United skipper Tom Thorpe also impressed Joyce.
"Josh has played well all pre-season and trained well. He has put in massive volumes of work, day in and day out, and got his rewards. It was a big step up as well, playing at a league ground in front of a reasonable crowd and against players who, by and large, played in the Championship last year," Joyce told manutd.com.
"But Thorpey was different class. He looks more than comfortable against that level of player. Paddy [McNair] did a decent job with him and I thought the midfield players ratted and worked in front, getting about them and taking the ball off them in good areas. So we hit them on the counter-attack as well as controlling the game."
