Jones: Early Man Utd criticism has motivated De Gea

Manchester United defender Phil Jones believes that teammate David De Gea has benefitted from the criticism he received during the early stages of his career at Old Trafford.

De Gea has earned a reputation as one of the finest goalkeepers in world football due to his performances for United over the last two seasons but it was not all rosy for the Spaniard as he had initially struggled to prove his credentials upon his arrival from Atletico Madrid back in 2011.

The 24-year old had received a lot of criticism for his poor performances in his debut season at the club but Jones believes that the early struggles have proven to be a blessing in disguise for his teammate.

"I think that start is one of the main reasons why he is where he is today," said Jones.

"It was a tough test and he's come through that with flying colours. You've seen the performances this season, he's been terrific.

"He's world class, there's no doubt about it. For me, he's the best goalkeeper in the world. There are no two ways about it; some might say I'm biased, but he's fantastic. The way he's progressed, you can't get any better.

"He just continues to get better and better, full credit to him. He's a humble lad, he's quiet, but he goes about his business the right way and he's a credit to himself."
