Martin Jol is in the frame for the Newcastle United job.

The Daily Mail says Blackburn's Mark Hughes remains the favourite to be Newcastle's next manager, but chairman Chris Mort has started his worldwide search for an alternative and has checked out the availability of Jol, Gerard Houllier, Louis van Gaal and Guus Hiddink.

Former Tottenham boss Jol was linked with the Newcastle job before Allardyce's departure six days ago and the Dutchman is believed to have made the first contact with Mort through his advisers.

Houllier wants a return to day-to-day management in this country after quitting French champions Lyon last summer.
