Jol admits goals won't guarantee Defoe Spurs place

Martin Jol hailed Jermain Defoe as the best finisher in England after his brace against Famagusta - but still cannot guarantee him a place.

Defoe has not started a game this season and was not even on the bench against Arsenal at the weekend, but he made an instant impact when brought on in the first leg of the UEFA Cup first-round clash.

He chipped home with his first touch before sealing a 6-1 win at White Hart Lane by finding the top corner in stoppage time.

"Jermain is the best finisher in the league around the box," said Jol. "But Robbie Keane is probably our top scorer over the last two years and there are another two strikers. I'm very happy that they are here.

"There is no guarantee for any player. I will look at each game separately. Bolton is a different game."

Defoe, who has been urged by Jol to show his commitment to Spurs by signing a new contract, grabbed his goals after coming on as a 63rd-minute replacement.

"That is the reason why we want to keep Jermain Defoe here," Jol added.
