Johnson and Donovan on target as USA downs Mexico

USA have bounced back to the winners list in their CONCACAF World Cup qualifying campaign courtesy of a 2-0 victory over Mexico in Columbus.

Juergen Klinsmann's men were disappointed to lose 3-1 to Costa Rica in San Jose on Friday but recoiled to beat their arch enemies and move to top spot on the hexagonal table.

Seattle Sounders striker Eddie Johnson rose above a pack of defenders to powerfully head home Landon Donovan's cross in the 49th minute to give the US the ascendency.

That advantage was doubled when LA Galaxy ace Donovan was on hand to prod home a low cross from the right from Mix Diskerud with just over ten minutes later.

Clint Dempsey had the opportunity to add to his international scoring tally but missed his penalty in injury time, however, it didn't dent the spirits of the Crew Stadium fans who filled the Ohio venue.

The US will qualify for the 2014 World Cup provided Honduras avoid defeat to Panama in Tegucigalpa tonight.
