Joeys bounce into quarter finals

The Qantas Joeys have easily accounted for Turkmenistan in their final group game of the Asian Football Confederations U16 Championships overnight. The 6-0 win enabled the Joeys to make a clean sweep of the three group stage matches and advance through to the quarter finals where they will meet Japan at the MHSK Stadium in Uzbekistan on Sunday 12th October. Newcastle Jets midfielder Ben Kantarovski opened the scoring in the 7th minute and a Danai Gapare double either side of the break secured the win for the Australians. Coach Martyn Crook was extremely happy after the match, especially considering the fact that new players were bought in to the starting line-up. "It was a good game for us as the new players produced a good performance and we are definitely happy with the result at the end of the day. "We wanted to give some rest to the key players after securing our place at the top of the group. The new boys did well although they were playing for the first time together. "We have a few injuries in the squad at the moment and while we used players in different positions, we also solved problems." If the Joeys can overcome Japan in the quarter final, they will meet the either Iran or Syria in the semis.
