Jimmy Montgomery has been appointed as Sunderland's first official ambassador.
Montgomery, one of the stars of Sunderland's 1973 FA Cup-winning side, made a record 627 appearances for the club.
Sunderland chief executive Margaret Byrne said: "I can think of no better person to represent the club than Jimmy. The word legend can often be overused, but it's the perfect description for Monty.
"He is quite simply Sunderland through and through and is held in such high esteem and affection by supporters and everyone here at the club. He is a true gentleman, a hugely respected figure in the football world and we are delighted and honoured that he has agreed to take on the role of club ambassador."
