Jewell says Hodgson needs two years at Liverpool

Former Liverpool striker Paul Jewell says Roy Hodgson needs two years to turn the club around.

Jewell, formerly in charge of Wigan Athletic and Bradford City, insists Hodgson must be given time at Anfield.

He told talkSPORT: "If as a manager you get the confidence of the board you can actually make long-term objective decisions.

"I remember when I was at Wigan, we were bottom of the league and everyone's expecting to get promoted in my first year. And he [Wigan chairman Dave Whelan] came and said 'look, sort it out this year, just finish mid-table if you can and next year I want to be in the top six by Christmas.' And I said that will do for me.

"So then I started making proper long-term decisions, getting rid of the players I wanted to, putting things in place for players that I wanted to bring in, and by next Christmas we were ten points clear.

"When you're trying to put sticking plasters on fractures it doesn't work. The board have got to be strong and say to Roy 'right, OK, you've got two years to sort it round' and hopefully that will happen."
