Newcastle Jets could retain English striker Francis Jeffers until the end of the season.

The former Everton and Arsenal man finishes his 10-match guest stint on Monday when the Jets take on Sydney FC at EnergyAustralia Stadium but he may stay with the club for the remainder of the season as an injury replacement player for fellow countryman Michael Bridges.

Following the Jets' 2-1 loss to Melbourne Victory on Monday night, coach Branko Culina indicated that Bridges could potentially be out for the season and that the club want Jeffers to stay.

CEO John Tsatsimas shed more light on the situation, saying that Bridges' problem was being evaluated as was Jeffers' current standing.

"We're assessing Michael as we go along at the moment, and talk of anything else would be premature without that assessment and knowing where Michael sits," Tsatsimas said.

"Hopefully Michael will be able to make a return sooner rather than later, but that's yet to be determined, so we're waiting to see with that," he told the Newcastle Herald.

"I don't want to pre-empt anything that the doctor may or may not say. It would be poor of me to make a comment on that when I'm not a physician myself."

As for Jeffers, he added: "Look, we'll be looking at every avenue, and obviously we've been talking to Francis on a number of fronts in terms of extending the longevity of his stay.

"But looking at a replacement, we don't want to say too much or pre-empt anything without having a proper and defined position in terms of Michael."
