Javier Hernandez: Manchester United move massive for Mexican football

You wonder who is more excited about Javier Hernandez's move to Manchester United - the player or Chivas president Jorge Vergara.

For 21 year-old Hernandez, it's an exciting, but daunting, move. After the failure of Carlos Vela (Arsenal) and Giovani dos Santos (Tottenham) to rise to the occasion in England, Hernandez knows there's a lot of expectation on his young shoulders.

Indeed, only hours about putting pen to paper on his United contract, Hernandez admitted he could be the litmus test for major European clubs suspicious about signing players directly from Mexico's top-flight.

"This is the beginning of a road for all young Mexican players," declared Hernandez. "I want to show that they too can fulfil their dreams and move from Mexico to a major European club.

"All I have are words of thanks to the people of Mexico for their support and president Jorge Vergara. And most of all to Chivas, which is a club that has always given young players their chance."

For Vergara, the Chivas president knows they are gaining a 'hands-on' partner in Manchester United, which could rake in commercial benefits off the pitch and greater expertise on it.

"We planned to keep Javier here for another two years," revealed Vergara. "He had agreed and we were happy to go forward together, with Javier helping us win championships before eventually selling him to a European club.

"But when Manchester came calling, we could not turn them down. How could we deny Javier the chance to work with one of the greatest coaches (Sir Alex Ferguson) in the history of football?"

But it wasn't all about doing a deal for Hernandez, which was negotiated by Vergara and his wife, Angelica Fuentes. Vergara also secured several exciting spin-offs as part of the agreement.

"It is the most important transfer I've been involved in since joining the club," revealed Vergara. "It is the biggest by far since the club was sold - financially and also football-wise."

The football terms include United being Chivas' opponents for the opening of their new stadium on May 24 and a partnership agreement with the world's biggest club.

Vergara continued: "I am grateful to Javier and our junior coaches who developed him for nine years, and obviously very excited because this means that for Chivas we begin a new, important period, because now we have a collaboration agreement with Manchester, that will allow many of our best young players to jump across the pond."

The first of which is Hernandez, who will 'audition' for United fans at the World Cup with Mexico before moving to Old Trafford.

"I am going there with the mindset of enjoying myself," he said. "I want to do all I can to show the best of Mexican football in England."

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson could grant Hernandez an early welcome present by selling Zoran Tosic this summer. It's not the competition that concerns Hernandez, but Tosic's assigned No14.

Hernandez wears the same number for Chivas and says: "The intention is to play with the same number I have now, but if I cannot, then whichever is fine, the important thing is to play in a team as big as Manchester."

ESPN Deportes commentator Fernando Schwarz has no doubts Hernandez has the temperament to handle the pressure that exists at Old Trafford.

"He has the patience and determination to go far beyond this stage (Mexico), we're talking about a boy with character, temperament and the desire to be the best," says Schwarz.

"He is young, humble, hardworking, well grounded and managed in the best way, both at home and with Chivas."

Hernandez hints he is ready, confident his promotion through Chivas' youth system will keep him in good stead.

"It's a nice challenge, I'm pretty calm and content," he says. "I know that all I have to do is the same as in Guadalajara. It is only a matter of adapting."

Will it be that easy? A generation of Mexican footballers - and those to come - are hoping so.
