Japanese ref Masaaki Toma enjoys controversy-free FA Cup debut

Japanese referee Masaaki Toma enjoyed a controversy-free FA Cup debut.

Toma made history on Saturday when he became the first non-British official to take charge of an FA Cup fixture.

Toma was in the UK as part of a referee exchange programme and was been selected to officiate the first round match between Brentford and Basingstoke, which the hosts won 1-0 at Griffin Park.

He appeared to dodge any controversy in the match and ended up handing out two yellow cards to Brentford and one for the non-league side.

Toma said: "The majority of players and both

"Both managers said, 'It was a great performance'. However, some people also told me my English was poor."
