Japan keeper Kawaguchi surprised at Narazaki exit

Japan national team goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi admits he is surprised at the retirement of fellow gloveman Seigo Narazaki.

Narazaki quit international football after Japan’s friendly with Guatemala on Tuesday and Kawaguchi, who has enjoyed a strong rivalry with Narazaki over the years, said the announcement came as a shock.

“To be honest I am surprised. It’s not as if he couldn’t cut it anymore,” Kawaguchi said.

The 35-year old Jubilo Iwata stopper said he had no plans of joining Narazaki on the sidelines.

“I will keep trying. I have no intention of drawing a line between myself and the national team. It’s up to the coach who he calls up.”
