Everton have secured 17 year-old James McCarten to a pro contract.

McCarten told evertonTV: "I'm very happy and relieved to have signed a professional contract because I've worked hard for it.

"I know there's lots more hard work now ahead of me."

The towering centre-back revealed that the presence of Alan Stubbs on the Everton coaching staff was proving beneficial.

"He has helped me since he came in, offering tips and advice when he gets the chance to speak to us," explained McCarten.

"I'm a centre-half and a local lad like Alan. I'd love to accomplish some of the things he's done in his career and follow in his footsteps.

"I always listen to advice from people like him because he has been there and done it."
