Everton defender Phil Jagielka is putting club before country as he prepares to make a playing return in the New Year.

Jagielka is in the final stage of his recovery from knee surgery.

On his World Cup chances with England, Jagielka said: "I am not sure. I was looking to get back before Christmas and hopefully stake a claim but unfortunately I don't know when I will be back, so I am not looking at the World Cup at the minute.

"I just want to put the new Everton kit on and run around on the pitch in it."
