Everton chairman Bill Kenwright was delighted for Jack Rodwell over his England debut.

The Birkdale-born player has told how a few words from Kenwright provided encouragement to step up his game this season.

"I had a chat with a lot of people, and this season was always going to be a big season for me," said Rodwell. "I've had the backing of all the people at Everton so would like to thank them.

"The chairman told me 'be confident, play your game and hopefully you'll get a regular role'.

"He said to keep playing my natural game and good things will happen."
