Italy coach Cesare Prandelli admits they've copped a difficult European Championship group draw.

Italy were grouped with Spain, Croatia and Giovanni Trapattoni’s Republic of Ireland in Group C.

“Spain are very strong and we will have to be mentally prepared when it comes to the opening game against them,” said Prandelli.

“We wanted to avoid Trapattoni. He immediately lowered the tension, as he said he wanted to come to Montecatini for the pre-tournament training camp and said he’ll change.”

There are doubts as to whether Italy will have their top stars at the tournament, as Antonio Cassano and Giuseppe Rossi are both out for six months after heart and knee surgery respectively.

“We hope to have Cassano and Rossi there.”
