Italy coach Lippi will not base World Cup squad on club form

Italy coach Marcello Lippi says he will not base his World Cup squad on club form.

Lippi admits there are only a handful of places he is yet to decide on.

He told Gazzetta dello Sport: "There are still four or five players who could go. I'll use the time remaining to make my evaluations and reach a decision, but we're already at an advanced stage."

Lippi has hinted he won't let the disastrous season at Juventus rule out many of the 2006 World Cup veterans.

"I think we have the chance to do well in this competition, but my faith goes beyond the names.

"I will consider many factors like physical fitness, quality and individual characteristics before making my decisions.

"In 2006 I didn't just bring those who had the most quality, but also the ones with talent who could help form a team. I think this group has great moral and psychological strength.

"Many of them are playing their final World Cup and want to put in a fitting performance. The results of their club sides could well be irrelevant, as I am sure they will prove their worth."
