Italy coach Marcello Lippi cannot guarantee a World Cup place for Juventus striker Amauri.
The Brazilian-born forward officially became an Italian citizen this week.
Lippi said: "When I spoke with him, I did not make any promises.
"From today onwards, I will start to follow him for La Nazionale, but there isn't any certainty that he will be called up.
"His application to become Italian started before I returned to coach Italy. It was one of Donadoni's ideas, which I shared when I came back because he is an important player."
"Criticism of Amauri suggesting that he hesitated too much between Brazil and Italy is unjust. He said right from the start that he wanted to be Italian and the other players know this."
