Italy coach Marcello Lippi has appealed to the local media to support him and his players.

The Azzurri boss has often had a fractious relationship with the Italian media and yesterday made an outright appeal to his 'enemy.'

Lippi said: "You journalists are an important component in the football world, so it's crucial that you give people a greater sense of faith in this squad, regardless of whether there are creative players.

"If you had your way, the next Italy Coach would be a poll. Every tactician makes his choices based on what he has seen throughout the year.

"There has to be more belief in the staff, otherwise the Federation should save money and not even appoint a manager. Just do a poll on who the fans and media want in goal, in defence, midfield, etc."
