Italy ace Toni: My early goal silenced Scotland crowd

"My goal was important because it allowed us to take the lead," said the striker after Italy's 2-1 win over Scotland.

As the Scots had to win, many were expecting them to get off to a storming start, but instead it was the Azzurri who broke through.

"The stadium was on fire, even if it was raining. You couldn't hear yourself think," he noted of a packed Hampden Park.

"We played a great game and in the end deserved our victory."

The Azzurri all wore black armbands in memory of Gabriele Sandri, the Lazio fan accidentally shot dead by police last week.

"I want to dedicate this win to Sandri. Faced with such a tragedy, our victory looks like a minor incident."
