It was a shock when Levein called me lazy - Everton's McFadden

James McFadden admits words from Scotland boss Craig Levein over a year ago still hurt.

The Everton forward was criticised by Levein for being lazy after he was hooked at half-time of a match against Liechtenstein in September 2010.

McFadden admits he put in a horror performance that night, along with Kris Boyd, but admits he was shocked to have heard what Levein said about him after that match.

"I had a stinker, there's no hiding from it. The whole week was set up in a way that the only outcome was for me and Boydy to fail," said McFadden, who incidentally not played for Scotland since.

"It was the worst game I've had with Scotland, but the comments afterwards from the management were out of order. And then everybody else just jumped on the bandwagon. "It was the first time I've ever been called lazy in my life.

"Any manager I've worked for will tell you that I'm not lazy. So it was a shock.

"It's up to him. He's the manager and he's got to make his decisions, so fair enough.

"But all that week it was 'I might play two up front and the players who come in have got to deliver'.

"And then it was 'We weren't playing well because of these two players'.

"James Morrison did well when he came on but I don't think you could have picked anybody else out that night and say they played well.

"But it was made out that it was all me and Boydy's fault."
