Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini believes that the criticism labeled at his club during this season has been unfair.
Pundits have blasted the reigning English champions for falling out of the title race this year but Pellegrini feels it is a difficult scenario for City as no team can continue to progress year after year.
"We cannot win trophies every year," he said. "It is impossible - especially in this year.
"This year Arsenal spend more money, Chelsea spend more money, United spend more money, Liverpool more money and have very strong squads.
"If in this season we finish in seventh place without Europe I understand. But when we are the whole season, 34 games, and always second I don't think that is the same criticism as when you are in sixth and seventh place.
"It is impossible for any club to progress always - it's impossible."
