Irvine sparks fans firestorm at West Brom

Alan Irvine has walked into a firestorm at West Bromwich Albion.

Albion only narrowly avoided the drop last season when they finished 17th in the Premier League with just 36 points..

Many supporters are now fearing the worst next season after turning to failed Preston and Sheffield Wednesday boss Irvine..

But 55-year-old Irvine yesterday vowed: "I'll work however many hours it takes to make things work..

"The fans are extremely passionate, terrific in getting behind the team, and I'm sure it is a great place to work as a player or a coach..

"I'm extremely excited about the challenge and I'll certainly give it everything I possibly can.".

Irvine's last managerial appointment saw him sacked at Sheffield Wednesday in February 2011 with the club lying 12th in League One.

After two years in charge he was also sacked at Preston in December 2009 after a run of one win in 10 games that saw them slip from the top six to 16th in the Championship.

West Brom's official Facebook page was crammed with negative comments about his appointment.
