Irish police are investigating a claim that a professional footballer assaulted a man in a Dublin nightclub at the weekend, reports BBC News. The footballer has not been named but it is understood that he is from Ireland and is based in the UK.

The investigation began when a man told police he had been assaulted in a club in Leeson Street, in the city centre, during the early hours of Saturday. He reported the alleged attack on Sunday afternoon.

A police spokeswoman said no arrest had been made.
