Arsenal wanted to sign Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given in January. Former City midfielder Stephen Ireland, now with Newcastle United, revealed the news while talking with So Foot.

"I saw Shay Given the other day, Arsenal want him but he can't go as City don't want to strengthen a rival," said Ireland.

The midfielder is still owned by Aston Villa, but now hopes to sign permanently with Newcastle.
