Ireland aim to beat England for Bolton defender Cahill

England risk missing out on Bolton Wanderers defender Gary Cahill.

The Sunday Mirror says Giovanni Trapattoni wants to offer Bolton defender Cahill the carrot of appearing in next year's World Cup for the Republic of Ireland.

The 23-year-old, who qualifies for Ireland through a grandparent, has played for England Under-21s and was called up to Capello's senior squad last week.

But he is way down the pecking order and was not even on the bench against either Ukraine or Belarus.
