Ipswich Town are silent on reports they've had an offer for Shola Ameobi accepted by Newcastle United.

The former England Under-21 international, 26, made just eight appearances for the Magpies last term and was sent to Coca-Cola Championship runners-up Stoke on loan for the final three months of the season.

The 6ft 2ins striker has been the subject of intense speculation since his return to St James' Park linking him with moves to East Anglian rivals Ipswich and Norwich, as well as a possible move to Major League Soccer.

But a statement on the Tractor Boys' official website, www.itfc.co.uk, read: "We are aware of reports today linking Ipswich Town Football Club with Shola Ameobi but we will not be making any comment on the matter."
