Inter Milan want Real Madrid to release Xabi Alonso in their deal for Douglas Maicon. Corriere dello Sport says Real are short of funds to meet Maicon's €35 million asking price, particularly after splashing out €25 million on Benfica winger Angel di Maria.

Inter are still keen to do business and have told Real if they include Xabi in their offer an agreement can be struck.

Rafa Benitez, Inter's new coach, has a good relationship with Xabi thanks to their time together at Liverpool.
