Inter Milan president Moratti still hopes for Mourinho U-turn

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti hasn't given up hope of Jose Mourinho reversing his decision to leave the Treble champs.

Mourinho has declared he wants to join Real Madrid, but the Inter President revealed this was a conversation they never actually had.

"We'll see how it goes with Mourinho," said Moratti this afternoon. "I prefer to have a face-to-face meeting and we'll see each other over the next few days.

"There is always hope, but we must also respect the wishes of someone who thinks his work is done."

The President also hinted at a potential stumbling block, as Mourinho's contract includes a £16m buy-out clause.

"His timing wasn't great, as the players could read the newspapers and so could I. There has never been a conversation about this or any attempt to let me understand the issue.

"It was left entirely up to me whether I should stamp down on it or not, but I was very protective of the side and wanted the season to end on a high.

"I think Mourinho has made this decision and dived in with both feet, as he wants to prove he is great in any club. How can you take that away from someone? You can judge him all you like, but understand that's his personality.

"There are perhaps some avenues we could take to keep hold of him, but I think he is more attracted by this new challenge and that's more important than money."
