Newcastle United aren't about to allow Inter Milan a free run at Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis.

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley wanted to bring in Gomis on a free transfer in the summer, after his contract runs out, but will not want to risk losing him if Inter make a late bid, says the Mail on Sunday.

Gomis has confirmed that he would be leaving Lyon.

He told RMC: "I think at the end of the season, it's time for me to go elsewhere."
