Inter Milan midfielder Dejan Stankovic has spoken of Tuesday's riot by Serbia fans. The Euro 2012 qualifier between Italy and Serbia was abandoned after six minutes when travelling fans smashed Plexiglas walls, sliced through protective netting and hurled fireworks at players.
"You all saw what happened," the Inter midfielder told Striscia La Notizia in his first interview since the incidents.
"There really isn't much room for interpretation or comment. As a team we went towards the stands to calm the situation and hope to play a relaxed game.
"Did we immediately understand how serious the situation was? Of course, as did everyone who saw what was happening."
Stankovic and his teammates caused controversy during the chaotic scenes when they walked over to the stands and applauded the Serb supporters, making the nationalistic three-finger salute.
"Our job and our desire was just to play a wonderful game of football and to calm the situation down.
"The gesture was just to calm the fans so that we could play this match, but it wasn't enough.
"I am very, very disappointed and cannot say any more."
