Injury dashes Man Utd trials for Grimsby youngster Bird

Grimsby Town youngster Matthew Bird has been forced to pull out of trials at Manchester United due to injury.

The 18 year-old centre-half was due to begin trials this week, but broke down in a Grimsby training session on Tuesday.

Bird's Mum, Julie said: "It's a shame but an injury is an injury. He is obviously not very happy about it but he was training and it wasn't right.

"He did everything he could to try and get it ready, like putting ice packs on it, but it's obviously not recovered in time.

"On the plus side they said when the ankle is better he can go back and give it another go."

Grimsby coach Neil Woods also told his club's website: "Man United, like any other club, watch players at all clubs and at all levels. They spoke to us and asked if he could go over there just to train with them to have a look at him.

"We don't want to put pressure on the lad. There's no talk of money or anything like that. It would give the boy a little bit of experience and an insight into how big club works.

"We don't want to get rid of him because he is a prospect for this club, just like a number of others in the Youth team."
