The Daily Mail says as his Spain team-mates lifted the World Cup for the first time in their history after beating a brutal Holland team 1-0 in extra time, Torres was nursing the injury that put the seal on what for him was a miserable tournament.
Having begun the final as a substitute and only coming on for the final 15 minutes of extra time, Torres actually played a role in Andres Iniesta's winning goal as his cross eventually found its way to the Barcelona midfielder courtesy of Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas.
But minutes later the Liverpool striker collapsed as he went to collect possession and was left writhing on the ground clutching his groin. Eventually, a stretcher was called and Torres was carried from the field in severe pain.
With much of his last season at Anfield disrupted by injury, the last thing the Spaniard needs as he considers the attractiveness of a switch to Barclays Premier League champions Chelsea is another injury setback.
