India star Chhetri released by Sporting Kansas City

India international Sunil Chhetri has been released by Major League Soccer outfit Sporting Kansas City.

The 26-year old striker became the second Indian ever (after Baichung Bhutia) to sign with a professional club when he penned a deal with Kansas City in March last year but his contract has now been waived after playing just one official match in the USA but none in MLS.

"Sporting Kansas City did not pick up Sunil Chhetri's option for 2011," club vice-president Communications Rob Thomson said.

Chhetri's one and only appearance for the team formerly known as the Wizards came in a Lamar Hunt US Open Cup qualifier against eventual MLS champions Colorado Rapids in April.

Reports suggest that A-League club Perth Glory are showing interest after it was revealed that the Western Australian club's director of football Dave Mitchell watched him closely at the recent Asian Cup in Qatar.
