Improved defensive performances required - Norwich's Martin

Norwich City defender Russell Martin admits the team needs to get better defensively.

The Canaries have conceded 12 in their past six but what worries Martin the most is the way some of those goals have come about with sloppy marking and giving opponents just an inch for them to find space in the area.

The 25-year old endured a tough afternoon against Arsenal's Robin van Persie as the Norfolk club crashed 2-1 at Carrow Road last week after leading and he knows that things have to get better at the back Paul Lambert's men want to remain mid-table or move higher.

"You get punished at this level. van Persie is in the form of his life at the moment and he is one of the best players in the world," Martin said ahead of tomorrow's visit of QPR.

"But we move on. We learned a lesson from it.

"We need to defend better. If we get back to a solid base we will win games.

"Under the gaffer it's all about winning.

"Against Arsenal anything is a bonus. But QPR are a team expected to be around us so that is the added importance."
