Imagine Liverpool kids when Gerrard walks in! - Wellens

Former Manchester United midfielder Richie Wellens thinks that Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard was right to turn down MK Dons job and instead take a role with the Reds academy.

Wellens, who spent the majority of his career playing in the lower leagues of English football, believes that only those players who have played in the lower tiers are suited to manage the clubs in them.

He further adds that Gerrard would be perfectly suited to manage the Reds after spending time with the academy which will certainly improve the budding youngsters at Melwood.

“Surely it will let him build his confidence? Then given him the first-team job," he told the Daily Mail.

“Imagine the boost in confidence of the kids when Gerrard walks in. They'll want to show him what they can do. We're generally lacking with that model.

“Imagine if he'd gone in there and got MK Dons relegated. It could have destroyed him. I'd love to go into an academy and work under good people. Let me learn my trade, going back to being an apprentice.

“You can then try and experiment with different things. I'm not looking for a quick fix. I'd be quite happy to retire at 37 and take the next five years to learn my trade. At 16, you don't go into the first team unless you're Wayne Rooney.

“Management's exactly the same."
