I wanted to protect Hesketh - Southampton boss explains Tadic change

Claude Puel revealed after Southampton's 0-0 draw with Hapoel Be'er Sheva the reason for his first-half substitution.

The Saints boss decided to bring Dusan Tadic on for attacking midfielder Jake Hesketh in just the 35th minute of the Europa League fixture in Israel after the 20-year-old experienced a difficult start to the contest.

"We tried to keep more possession and play with more calm with Dušan coming on," the Frenchman told southamptonfc.com.

"It was a difficult game for Jake so I prefer to protect him as he is a good player for the future.

"It was a big experience for him and all my players with all the fans of Hapoel in the stadium."

Academy product Hesketh, who scored his first goal for Southampton in the recent EFL Cup win over Crystal Palace, was making his second start of the season for the south coast club.
