Hull striker Long regrets missed Republic of Ireland opportunities

Shane Long admits he could have been more efficient in front of goal in the Republic of Ireland's 2-1 friendly loss to Serbia on Wednesday night.

The Hull City striker scored an early opener for Martin O'Neill's side at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin but missed gilt-edged chances either side of the half-time break.

Serbia went on to score twice in the second half to inflict a first defeat on O'Neill but it could have been a different story if Long had have put away his opportunities.

"I did a lot of things right and caused a few problems but, sadly, my game will be remembered for the two misses," Long said after the match.

"Nine out of 10 times, you would take those chances in training but unfortunately they didn't go in.

"Luckily, though, it wasn't a qualifier. The gaffer tried a few things and hopefully I've given him something to think about."

Of the result, Long added: "Serbia offered a good test. They like to get the ball down and play football and that is what we are going to be up against in the qualifiers.

"There are a lot of positives."
