Hull City captain James Chester laughs about the time he wore the armband for Manchester United.

During his one and only appearance in the United first team on January 20, 2009, the teenage defender found himself with unwanted burden of responsibility when replacing Gary Neville for the closing stages of a Carling Cup semi-final at home to Derby County.

“Gary Neville gave me the armband when he came off, so I was left holding it,” said Chester, recalling his moment of panic almost five years ago.

“Then the ball came into play, so I was running around with the armband in my hand for about a minute. I think I gave it to John O’Shea in the end. I was just glad to get rid of it.”

He also told the Hull Daily Mail: “That night was nice for my mum and dad. They were there in the crowd that day.

“It was nice for them to be there, having took me up and down the motorway all that time. It was a nice moment.”
